About this website

From diaries and messages to extensive memoir

The inspiration to develop a website came to my mind, when I was often asked to share my travel stories and experiences after I returned home.

When I started my backpacking career in the mid-1990s I was initially writing for newspapers, reporting for a radio station and local TV channel. Eventually I presented my extensive travels of Big Tours through slide shows in libraries throughout Slovenia. With the rise of online video sharing platforms, the popularity of slide presentations has significantly diminished and I stopped sharing the experiences publicly.

I am not a professional photographer nor dedicated writer and always travel as light as possible. I replaced my compact camera by smart phone, as the resolution of digital cameras reached an acceptable standard. I prefer being nonintrusive and enjoying the moments rather than carry professional equipment or engage in complex video production that could threaten my security or affect the privacy of those around me.

Let’s establish a lasting legacy about my adventures

In the early 2020s I made the decision to consolidate all my memories into a digital format; a combination of general countries descriptions, the most important landmarks that I visited, some basic or interesting facts about the nations and personal adventures. All the information is enriched with thousands of photos and videos.

The basis for writing were the diaries that I carefully wrote during the Big Tours. Later, written notes were replaced by e-mails or messages to my friends and family. The important source of information are also the pictures, which always bring to light countless memories associated with them.

How is the information presented?

The information can be accessed through three distinct groups of menus located at the top:

Big Tours

This section presents three extensive tours that facilitated my exploration of a large part of four continents: American Big Tour (1996 – 1997), Asian Big Tour (1999 – 2000) and African Big Tour (2004 – 2005). A detailed list of the countries I visited during these tours is provided at the end of the post.

Destinations

This section outlines my travels across the continents and their respective regions, which are created according to the UN Statistics Division: Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Each continent is subdivided into various regions, and the description of these continents and regions concludes with a list of the countries I have explored in each area.

Decades

This section is arranged in a chronological manner, into decades: 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. Each decade was distinct, presenting its own challenges and opportunities for travel. The early beginnings in analog technology required a greater degree of improvisation than what is experienced in the 2020s.

It is easy to forget the old-fashion way of travelling when a Lonely Planet guide was regarded a traveler’s bible as the primary source of information. Recently anyone can easily access information beforehand, plan accommodations in advance, and benefit from the experiences shared by other backpackers in multiple formats.

Countries visited

In the section titled Countries visited I provide a chronological list of the countries I have traveled to, starting from my homeland and progressing to the most recently visited destinations: Country name, Year of first visit, Accumulated days spent in the country.

Easy search for peculiar information

For any particular country or destination, the SEARCH bar is conveniently located on the top right of every page or post.
