On January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale struck southern Haiti. Its epicenter was near Léogâne, approximately 25 km west of the capital Port-au-Prince. The Red Cross reported that three million individuals were impacted, and according to official figures 222,570 people were killed, 300,000 injured and 1.3 million displaced.

While living in Panama at that time, I immediately decided to donate food and medicine for those suffered from the earthquake. Similar to the first two FARO projects, money was collected from friends in Slovenia and this time also in Panama. We bought food and medicine, packed them, and organized transport to Haiti through the Panamanian Red Cross.

In contrast to the initial two projects, the aid was not delivered directly under the supervision of a FARO representative, as this was not feasible due to a combination of circumstances.

The Haiti donation project is part of FARO, a voluntary and 100% donor-funded initiative serving to improve the quality of life of underprivileged children in developing countries. Read more about FARO at this link.
