In January 2009, the second FARO initiative involved donating books and food to a school located in the Bobo Dioulasso region of Burkina Faso. The school Ecole Abc Bobo was built with funds from the non-profit NGO, Abc Children’s Aid International from Iceland, but the available funds have been exhausted, leading to a shortage of money for books and food for the students.

The school’s mission was to provide education to the underprivileged children in the area, who would otherwise be destined to a life on the streets without the chance for formal learning. Their parents either lacked the financial means or were unwilling to invest in their children’s basic education. One of the primary methods to encourage children to participate in classes was the provision of hot meals, addressing their inadequate nutrition at home.

I spent two days with teachers, children, cooks and other employees of the school. We purchased academic material, books, cooking utensils and food on the local market.

I participated in the learning process, where I encountered basic classrooms, unbearable heat and noise. The progress depends on the enthusiasm and dedication of poorly paid teachers. Until my arrival notebooks were only available in the upper grades. For the purpose of monitoring, most educational materials are generally kept at the school.

The Burkina Faso donation project is part of FARO, a voluntary and 100% donor-funded initiative serving to improve the quality of life of underprivileged children in developing countries. Read more about FARO at this link.
