Southern Africa
Stunning desert scenery, great wildlife viewing, easy travel
Southern Africa is the southernmost region of Africa.
There is no universally accepted definition of Southern Africa. However, several classifications exist, including the UN scheme, the Southern African Development Community designation, and a purely geographical definition based on physical features.
As per the United Nations there are 5 countries in this region: Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia and South Africa.
I have traveled to Botswana and Namibia so far.
By far the largest and most important country in the region is South Africa. South Africa is an economic superpower, known worldwide for its history of apartheid. It gained fame through the efforts of Nelson Mandela and offers unique wildlife experiences in many national parks
Botswana, with its vast Okavango Delta and the largest elephant population in the world, is an exclusive safari destination. Almost 40% of its land is dedicated to national parks. I visited Chobe National Park in 2025, but I was disappointed by the large crowds and high prices.
Namibia is one of the world’s least populated countries, defined by vast open spaces and striking natural beauty. Home to the ancient Namib Desert and some of the tallest dunes, it combines stunning landscapes with effective community-based conservation.
Most tourists never get a true glimpse of local life in Namibia, while most locals can’t afford to visit the most beautiful landscape and attractions of their homeland.
I got a deeper understanding than the typical tourist in a luxury 4×4, who spends most of their time in isolated spots.
