About this website

From diaries and messages to extensive memoir

Welcome to my travel blog.

I am not a professional photographer, neither a dedicated writer, but I have always shared my travel adventures in some way.

At the beginning of my backpacking career in the mid-1990s I wrote articles and reports for newspapers, radio station and local TV channel. Eventually, I also presented my extensive travels of Big Tours projecting my pictures in old slide format in libraries throughout Slovenia. With the rise of online sharing platforms, the popularity of in-person presentations diminished significantly and I stopped sharing the experiences publicly.

Nevertheless, I was invariably asked by family and friends to recount my travel stories and experiences upon returning home.

Preserving memories on my travel blog

In the early 2020s I decided to consolidate all my memories into digital format.  I digitalized my slides and 35mm film format pictures, and transcribed the diaries that I dutifully wrote by hand.

Once the content was digital, creating a website as a travel blog felt natural. I find interactive content more suitable and user-friendly than a book, since readers can browse only what they prefer.

The website text comes from my original diaries, emails and messages that I sent to family and friends.  It also reflects he impressions that come to my mind when I look at my photos.

The photos and videos are 100% mine. I don’t use professional equipment and always travel as light as possible. First, I used a film analog camera, later a compact digital camera and currently a smartphone. I prefer to stay nonintrusive and simply enjoy the moment. Carrying professional equipment or doing complex media work could threaten my security or affect the privacy of people around me.

How is the information presented?

Each country I visited has its own post, which includes a general description, the main landmarks I saw, my personal experiences and impressions. There are also many photos and videos that, hopefully, express more than words.

The posts can be accessed through three distinct groups of menus located at the top:

Big Tours

It showcases 3 extensive tours through which I explored a large part of four continents:

A detailed list of the countries I visited during each of these tours is provided at the end of the post.

Destinations

This section outlines my travels across the continents, which are created according to the UN Statistics Division: Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Each continent is subdivided into various regions, and the description of these continents and regions concludes the list of countries I have explored in each area.

Decades

Since traveling has changed quite a lot in the last 3 decades, this section arranges the countries visited according to decades: 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. Each decade was distinct, presenting its own challenges and opportunities for travel, both by technology as well as my lifestyle. The early days of analog technology required much more improvisation than what I experience in the 2020s.

It is easy to forget the old-fashion way of travelling when a Lonely Planet guide was regarded a traveler’s bible as the primary source of information. Nowadays anyone can easily look up information in advance and plan routes with navigation systems. Modern travelers can also benefit from experiences shared by other backpackers in many different formats.

Countries visited

Here I list the countries I have travelled to in chronological order. The list begins with my homeland and continues to the most recent places I have visited.
