South Asia
Heavily marked by religions and variety of geographical features
South Asia makes up only 10% of the Asian continent, but the population with over 2 billion represents about 25% of the world’s population. It is recognized as both; the most populous and the most densely populated geographical region in the world.
South Asia includes 9 countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The region is hugely diverse in terms of languages, ethnic groups, architecture, literature, philosophy, art, cultural practices and religions.
Two defining characteristics of South Asia are its remarkable population density and the profound impact of religion. This region boasts the tallest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest, and is the birthplace of some of the earliest civilizations, as well as the origin of Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism.
During my Asian Big Tour, I visited Bangladesh and India in 2000, and later explored Pakistan and Afghanistan in 2023. The region has undergone substantial transformations, characterized by rapid development and a continually growing population, often accompanied by conflicts and even wars. While I encountered some of the most hospitable people, I also experienced moments of fatigue from the overwhelming presence of crowds.
A notable feature shared by most countries in South Asia, with the exception of Bhutan, is the opportunity for budget-friendly travel.
The availability of affordable lodging, meals, and transportation enabled me to explore the region even when my financial resources were limited elsewhere.
I am convinced that this area still holds some of the most stunning and fulfilling destinations on the planet. As long as peace prevails and the climate remains favorable, I eagerly anticipate visiting the countries I have yet to explore.
