FARO donation initiative at ABC Children Aid School in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

In January 2009, the FARO donation initiative in Burkina Faso provided books and food to a school in the Bobo Dioulasso region.

The school Ecole Abc Bobo was built with funds from the non-profit NGO Abc Children’s Aid International from Iceland. During my visit, the funds had been exhausted, causing a shortage of money for books and food for the students.

The school’s mission was to provide education to the underprivileged children in the area, who would otherwise be destined to a life on the streets without the chance for formal learning. Their parents either lacked the financial means or were unwilling to invest in their children’s basic education. One of the primary methods to encourage children to participate in classes was the provision of hot meals, addressing their inadequate nutrition at home.

I spent two days with teachers, children, cooks and other employees of the school. I participated in the learning process, where I encountered basic classrooms, unbearable heat and noise. The progress depends on the enthusiasm and dedication of poorly paid teachers.

Until my arrival, notebooks were only available in the upper grades. For the purpose of monitoring, most educational materials are generally kept at the school.

FARO’s contribution consisted in the purchase of academic material, books, cooking utensils and food on the local market.

FARO donation initiative in Burkina Faso is part of FARO, a voluntary program fully funded by donors. It aims to improve life for marginalized children in developing countries. You can learn more about FARO by reading the information at this link.
